Chapter 10 Summary: “Adam, Sunday, March 10, Marvel: Photos”

Adam gives Hanna a rock case he made for her collection and tells her stories about their mom. Whenever Adam tells her such stories, Hanna holds a photo of their mom while listening. He tells her about the time they made a house and garden in a jar together.

The next day, Adam’s dad drives him and Hanna to school for Hanna’s field trip. Adam is glad to see Zayneb there. She references her mom during their conversation and then pauses. Adam realizes that her aunt told her about his mom and assures her that it’s okay to talk about her.

Adam and Zayneb end up on different buses to the museum for the field trip. They’re in different tour groups, too. On the way home, they text about their favorite parts of the trip and their favorite animals. Adam then invites Zayneb to come to “a rescue shelter for salukis” with him and Hanna the next day (79).

That night, Adam, his dad, and Hanna say their prayers together. Afterward, Adam thinks about his mom and his diagnosis. He has MS, too, and still doesn’t know if he should tell his dad and Hanna.

Chapter 11 Summary: “Zayneb, Monday, March 11, Oddity: Trauma”

Zayneb discovers that salukis are dogs. She agreed to go to the shelter but now regrets it because she’s been afraid of dogs ever since she was bitten by one as a child. On the way there with Adam and Hanna, Hanna tells Zayneb about the dogs at the shelter and their difficult pasts. Zayneb is afraid of the dog Ariel when they arrive because Hanna said she sometimes bites. She lingers at the edge of the yard while Adam and Hanna play with the dogs. On the way home, they talk about different Muslim people’s ideas about dogs. When they arrive at Zayneb’s, Adam doesn’t say goodbye in his usual friendly manner. Zayneb hopes he texts her later.

Kavi messages Zayneb another update about school: Ayaan has been removed from the student council because of her social media activity. Zayneb wants to apologize to her, but Kavi says she doesn’t want to talk. Afterward, Zayneb messages Ayaan anyway, but Ayaan asks to be left alone. Then, Zayneb gets a message from the Emmas asking her to meet up at the mall in Doha. She journals about Adam and the shelter. Hanna sends her photos from the day, but Adam still hasn’t said anything.

Chapter 12 Summary: “Adam, Tuesday, March 12, Marvel: Plans”

Adam avoids his dad because he’s always upset on the anniversary of his mom’s death. He retreats to his mom’s old downstairs room to work on his project. He’s been redoing the room as a surprise for Hanna since he came home. He thinks about telling his dad about his diagnosis while working. He’s started feeling weak and shaky, which is what happened after the shelter. He couldn’t even say goodbye to Zayneb. He wants to message her but wonders if there’s any point in “hanging around with her” when he’s sick (101).

Adam’s friend Connor comes over to be with Adam. Connor knows it’s the anniversary of Adam’s mom’s death and doesn’t want him to be alone. Meanwhile, Adam thinks about his various friends. He’s glad for them even if they’re all different from him. Then, he and Connor talk about their crushes, and Adam admits that he likes Zayneb. Connor reminds him that Emma P. likes him, too.

Chapter 13 Summary: “Zayneb, Tuesday, March 12, Oddity: Falls”

Zayneb starts taking a yoga class with Auntie Nandy, hopeful that it’ll make her calmer. She doesn’t like the class and sneaks out. She wanders to the gym’s pool and gets in the water. Her worries disappear as she breathes and swims. Then a middle-aged woman confronts her about wearing inappropriate clothing in the pool. Zayneb starts talking back but then stops herself and gets out of the water.

Zayneb gets ready to meet up with the Emmas. She checks her phone, but Adam still hasn’t responded. She considers telling her sister, Sadia, about him, curious as to what she’d say.

Zayneb meets up with the Emmas, who reveal that Adam is joining them, too. They all talk about Adam, his mom, and Emma P.’s crush on him. Zayneb realizes that Adam isn’t talking to her because he probably likes Emma P.

Chapter 14 Summary: “Adam, Tuesday, March 12, Marvel and Oddity: Friends”

At the mall, Adam watches Zayneb staring at her food while sitting with the Emmas. He tries to catch her eye, but she doesn’t look up. Then, the Emmas ask Adam to join them at the dunes the next day. Adam wonders if Emma P. still likes him and feels disappointed when Zayneb gets up and doesn’t come back.

Chapter 15 Summary: “Zayneb, Tuesday, March 12, Oddity: Impulsiveness”

Zayneb leaves the mall without saying goodbye and goes home. She starts washing some dishes and thinks about Adam and the Emmas while working. She puts on some pajamas and watches Little Women. The story makes her wonder about her messy personality. She keeps thinking about Adam and her friends at home. Kavi starts messaging her, and they get on FaceTime to talk. Kavi is at school, and their classmate Noemi pops into the frame. The girls tell Zayneb how things have been at school. They discuss Fencer, social science, and being Muslim. Noemi shares and listens, too. Zayneb is surprised Noemi has an open mind, because Noemi is white and doesn’t know her that well. Kavi and Noemi explain that they’re going to try to help Ayaan and keep pushing back at Fencer.

Auntie Nandy gives Zayneb her mom’s old burkini. She talks to Zayneb about what happened at the pool. She doesn’t like how the woman treated Zayneb and thinks that Zayneb should stand up for herself.

Chapter 16 Summary: “Adam, Tuesday, March 12, Marvel: Strangers”

Adam starts to feel sick while at the movies with his friends. He sneaks out of the theater and calls a taxi. The driver notices that Adam isn’t okay. He helps Adam to the door when they arrive at Adam’s house, introducing himself as Zahid. Zahid leads him inside and stays with Adam until he seems okay. Adam stays in bed the rest of the day. His vision is blurry, and he can’t move his legs. He tries to get up but falls. He’s afraid, but he doesn’t want to tell his dad and Hanna what’s happening.

Chapters 10-16 Analysis

Chapters 10-16 develop the novel’s explorations of the Muslim Identity in Contemporary Society, the Impact of Chronic Illness on Young Adults, and the Effects of Racism and Islamophobia on Personal Development. While Zayneb’s and Adam’s chapters explore overlaps between these themes, each character is differently impacted by illness, racism, and their social settings. For Zayneb, leaving Indiana for Doha over her spring break gives her a temporary escape from her hostile home environment. In Doha, she initially feels accepted and seen by those around her. However, the longer she is there, the more personal and social challenges she faces. For example, her continued communications with her friends from home bring her old life into her current life in Doha. In Chapter 11, she learns through Kavi that Ayaan has not only gotten into trouble for #EatThemAlive but also doesn’t want to talk to Zayneb anymore. Later, in Chapter 15, Zayneb learns about Fencer’s continued Islamophobia and Kavi and Noemi’s attempt to combat it. These dialogues make Zayneb feel isolated because she is losing her connections with her Muslim friends and feels incapable of supporting them while away. She wants to continue fighting for what it means to be Muslim and to defend her beliefs, but she also fears that doing so is impacting her friendships and her safety. Her Muslim identity therefore threatens her well-being because others treat her negatively because of it. Meanwhile, Adam struggles to confront the truth of his illness. Because he has “the same disease [his] Mom had” (82), he hesitates to tell his father and Hanna the truth. As a result, Adam isolates himself. Much like Zayneb, he needs love and support but doesn’t know how to ask for it. His chronic illness therefore begins to impact his emotional well-being and amplify his personal challenges.

Cracks begin to form in Zayneb’s and Adam’s developing relationship the more time that they spend together. Zayneb and Adam feel a strong attraction to one another. Their experiences at the museum and the dog shelter particularly bring them together. However, because Adam hasn’t told anyone about his illness, he starts to withdraw. He wants to continue getting to know Zayneb but can’t help wondering, “Was there any use? Of just hanging around with her? When it wouldn’t come to anything?” (101). Zayneb reads Adam’s silence in the days following the shelter as a sign that he doesn’t like her. “Retreat, Zayneb,” she tells herself in Chapter 15 after Adam fails to respond to her messages or talk to her while at the mall with his friends. The characters’ inability to communicate openly with one another therefore starts to come in the way of their true emotions. They are each allowing their personal and social challenges to complicate their romantic attraction. As a result, Zayneb and Adam each feel more alone as they try to come of age without the help and support they crave.

Zayneb’s and Adam’s respective challenges throughout Chapters 10-16 reveal the complications of their unique coming-of-age experiences. For Zayneb, visiting her aunt in Doha is a chance for her to reinvent herself. She’s decided to try being a quieter, more tolerant, and passive person in Doha because she realizes that speaking her mind is getting her into trouble. This is why she agrees to take the yoga class with Auntie Nandy in Chapter 13. She is hopeful that “a lot of [careful] breathing” will help her with her “resolution to become calmer” (107). Later in the chapter, Zayneb also takes care when she gets ready to hang out with the Emmas. She doesn’t want to admit that’s trying “to fit in with their crowd” but knows that she is “trying to make sense to them” (112). She is attempting to change her character because her experiences at home in Indiana have taught her that her true identity can be too much for others. Meanwhile, Adam similarly tries to disguise his true experience by hiding his diagnosis from his family and friends. He doesn’t want to appear weak and fears that admitting the truth will only hurt his dad and sister more. In these ways, the protagonists struggle to claim their respective identities amidst their challenging circumstances.
